Here, I'm going to show a more in-depth guide of how to create your free ringtone for your iPhone via iTunes itself =D I did this on Windows 7, which is same as Windows Vista and XP.

Before you get started, make selections as the picture below. Tick show Ringtones and also select the Import Using in the Import Settings to AAC Encoder.

Click Edit --> Preference to get the menu above.

Here I did this on iTunes 9, so it's updated one.
Firstly, select a song and do as the following. Do note that the length of 30 seconds for a ringtone is maximum. Here I will demonstrate using a nice song by the Black Eyed Peas, Rock That Body.

Right click on the desired song and click Get Info. Click OK after that.

After that, right click the desired song again and click Create ACC Version.

By here you can see a new "duplicate" appeared after a tone is heard, but it is actually the AAC version. Locate the ACC version of the song in this directory :
Code:
C:\Users\(USERNAME)\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\
Username here is your Windows account's name.

Now that you've located the desired song, you will have to change the file type. From .m4a, you'll have to change to .m4r format. You'll have to disable "Hide extensions for known file type" this by clicking Tools --> Folder Options and select the View tab.

http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv239/koki1337/pic4.jpg

Then rename the desired song file extension type from .m4a(For example Rock That Body.m4a) to .m4r(For example Rock That Body.m4r).

http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv239/koki1337/pic5.jpg

Then just double click on the changed song, (For example Rock That Body.m4r) and iTunes will pop up in the Ringtones menu. You can see that the song(For example Rock That Body.m4r) is there. Just connect your iPhone and sync it in!

You're done! Good luck and enjoy your new ringtone! :p

Also be sure to remove the start and stop timing of the song =D (If it's not removed automatically)

Nice Guide pity the forum won't let you display pics...did you use the picture code for the forum and input your url to see if they would display?

The forum allows to post pictures, but then the picture size extends off the borderline of the forum.
If I do resize it then the writings will go off

oh ok i get you...better to have the pictures as you did them then, so that they are legible. I wish we had more discussion on the site, but i think the crux of the matter might be that most of our users, myself included don't actually have an iphone. A bigger part of discussion on forums, almost seems to come from users helping each other, but so far we are almost a problemless forum:eek:

I agree with you!
I myself don't have an iPhone too and the worse thing is my sister just moved to the capital to work.
And we mostly just discuss about iPhone-related things since we don't have an iPhone ourselves to experience any problems

Sorry for making a new thread about this exact subject but I didnt see it before..I will try this since i seem to have everything needed..the only thing that doesnt seem to be explained is what 30 second part of the song becomes the ringtone?? I will assume its the first part cause Apple wants you to buy ringtones from them..will give it a shot and let you know how it goes..nice post

also I will edit my thread to-- how do I make ringtones from sound clips from avi files or related formats

Oh wow, I didnt notice this thread here. I have just posted a question earlier today on how much it is to download ringtones (i do not own an iPhone yet) but this is very helpful once I have one. Thank you to the person who decided to share their knowledge, it was very nice of you! :)

Haha, I got this guide online, but it's rather a mess reading that guide.
So I simplified it and re-posted with some pictures for easy reference :D
Hope you all like it

I had no idea this was the Guide you were talking about. I am going to try it before I go to bed.

This piece of information is really handy, and I must appreciate, the way it is simplified, because I never found a simple guide like this on making a ring tone. I am definitely going to try it. Nice work!

I have used the guide exactly the way it was given and it works very well. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this. I'm glad it worked and I'm going to forward it to my friends too.

I must appreciate the information provided by the OP but I would add that I haven't bothered about creating my own ringtone ever since I started making use of iPhone. I just downloaded songs I like and use them as my ringtone.

I actually use an audio cutter to create my own unique ring tones and I have been using the same audio cutter for a couple of years now.
